Service learning - student with native

ImageStudents attending Semester In Spain are integrating their faith and learning outside the classroom. Our desire is to draw students away from the inward focus that a study abroad experience can so often produce and toward a outward focus. The commitment to love our neighbor calls us to serve. Jesus said, "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me." (John 12:26). Putting faith into action in Spain is an exciting method that will bring new meaning to the language and culture.

You may choose to enroll in Acción Solidaria (Service Learning in Spain, SIS 450), a 2 credit course that places advanced students either with a retirement community, Solidarios- a homeless outreach in partnership with University of Seville students, or a women's and children's shelter housed at the Convento Santa Isabel. Here you will learn the language of service and meet some very dedicated Spaniards that share a commitment to help others.

There are also schoolwide service projects such as a Christmas Party/Spring Carnival for Convento Santa Isabel orphans and Bingo nights with the elderly at the Hospital de la Caridad. Through "Taller de Ingles" and "Tutoría en la Universidad," students, led by Professor Gallego, volunteer to help with English in a local private elementary school and with University of Seville English majors who are in need of some conversation help. Many students have also provided their talents and time to local churches they have attended. If you feel called to serve, you can expect to receive as much as you give...
